Parliament Rejects Proposal for Disclosure of Social Support Fund Donors

The Cypriot Parliament rejected a proposal by AKEL to disclose the details of donors to the Independent Social Support Fund, with 19 votes against and 15 in favor. The proposal aimed at parliamentary oversight, as there are allegations of companies receiving state contracts while simultaneously donating to the Fund. Opposition MPs denounced restrictions on the exercise of parliamentary control by the Legal Service and the Data Protection Commissioner. Government MPs argued that the Parliament should not act declaratively or challenge court decisions. The discussion highlighted issues of transparency and accountability in the operation of the Fund, as well as the need for a full investigation of its finances and relationships with donors.
