“Since you didn’t give me the Nobel, I’m not obliged to think only about peace”: Trump’s letter full of complaints to the Norwegian Prime Minister

US President Donald Trump stated in a letter sent to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre that he no longer feels “obliged to think only about peace” after the Norwegian Nobel Committee did not honor him with the Nobel Peace Prize, while reiterating his request for the US to take control of Greenland, according to Reuters and AFP. “Given that your country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize after I ended ‘MORE’ than 8 wars, I no longer feel obliged to think only about peace,” Trump wrote in a message to Støre. “Although it always will, now I can think about what is good and right for the United States,” he added. The Republican then challenged Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland once again, claiming that neither Copenhagen nor existing security guarantees would be able to protect the Arctic island. “Denmark cannot protect this territory from Russia or China and anyway why should they have ‘ownership’ rights. There are no written documents, just a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had ships there too,” Trump stressed. The authenticity of the message was confirmed by a source familiar with the matter, as well as by Støre speaking to the Norwegian newspaper VG. The Norwegian government does not decide who will be honored with the Nobel Peace Prize. An independent Nobel Committee is responsible for this. “Regarding the Nobel Peace Prize, I have made it clear to Trump many times, something that is well known, that an independent Nobel Committee and not the Norwegian government awards the prize,” Støre replied in a statement sent to Bloomberg. Separately, Støre today described Trump’s threat to impose additional tariffs on European countries opposing his efforts to put Greenland under US control as “unacceptable”.
