The head of the Pan-Cypriot Veterinary Association, Dimitris Epameinondas, described the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus as a “sad reality” and a difficult management. He explained that foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious viral disease that affects animals such as cattle, sheep, goats and pigs, causing high fever, loss of appetite and blisters in the mouth and feet. Mr. Epameinondas reassured the public that dairy products, such as halloumi, are safe for consumption if they undergo heat treatment, and that exports are not affected. The virus is mainly transmitted through direct contact, contaminated clothing, food or vehicles, but can also be airborne under certain conditions. He emphasized the importance of adhering to hygiene rules on farms and the effectiveness of common disinfectants in neutralizing the virus. Mr. Epameinondas assured that the veterinary community is fully prepared and will do whatever it takes to stop the spread of the disease.
