Foot-and-Mouth Disease: 7-Member Advisory Committee of Academics Formed – “We Know Much More Than About Covid”

The Ministry of Agriculture has established a seven-member advisory committee of academic experts to address the foot-and-mouth disease crisis. The committee comprises representatives from the Veterinary Services, the Pan-Cypriot Veterinary Association, the Ministry of Health, and academics from TEPAK and the University of Nicosia. The goal is to manage the crisis and make decisions regarding vaccination and other actions. The current priority is vaccination, pending decisions from the European Commission regarding requests for deviations from the mass culling of infected animals. Experts recognize the strictness of European legislation, which provides for culling due to the contagiousness of the virus, but are also considering other approaches. It is pointed out that foot-and-mouth disease does not pose an immediate threat to public health, but the need for psychological support for farmers affected by the crisis is emphasized. The Ministry of Health, through the Mental Health Services and the OKYPY, provides psychological care to those who need it. Experts state that knowledge of foot-and-mouth disease is extensive, as the disease has been known for years, and that there are effective methods of control. However, they emphasize the need for caution in the way culling is carried out and the psychological impact it has on farmers.
