Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Decision on Universal Vaccination in 2 Weeks

Organized groups of cattle and sheep/goat farmers were informed about the vaccination program and protective measures against foot-and-mouth disease at a meeting at the ZENON Coordinating Center in Larnaca. Veterinarian Konstantinos Konstantinou stated that vaccinations for cattle within a three-kilometer radius are expected to be completed soon, followed by vaccinations for sheep and goats within a two-kilometer radius around pig farms. European Union experts appeared hesitant regarding the extension of vaccination to areas where the disease has not yet appeared. They will study the case for another 14 days before deciding on the universal vaccination of the livestock population in Cyprus. The decision will depend on the risk assessment and the impact on the economy. The cattle and sheep/goat farmers expressed concerns regarding the future of the vaccination program and the assurance of the disposal of their products. The Akamas Paphos team, which is located in a remote area where the disease has not developed, is not currently considering the possibility of vaccination. The final decision on universal vaccination is expected in two weeks. The assurance of animal health and the protection of the economy are the key factors that will determine the decision.
