Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Impact on Halloumi Production - 'Situation Manageable'

The situation with foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus is serious and causes concern, but is considered manageable, according to the Spokesman of the Cheese Makers Association, Michalis Koullouros. The culling of 13,000 animals due to the virus affects halloumi production, but initial indications suggest that the situation can be controlled if the spread of the disease is limited. Both sheep and cattle are affected by foot-and-mouth disease, which impacts halloumi production. Further culling of animals could lead to a shortage of milk for cheese production, creating problems for exports. The Cheese Makers Association emphasizes that there is no reason for consumers to worry, as products produced in Cyprus are absolutely safe. Cheesemakers have taken strict biosecurity measures in their units from the moment they were informed of the disease in December. Approximately 80% of milk production in Cyprus is intended for halloumi production, and milk collection takes place from all regions. The situation is being closely monitored, with the hope that the number of animal deaths will remain at current levels. Cheesemakers are cooperating with Veterinary Services to address the crisis.
