Foot and Mouth Disease: 38 Positive Units Remain

The outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Cyprus remains limited to 38 units within the infected zone of the Larnaca Province. All other test results from samples taken from other provinces, including Larnaca outside the infected area, have come back negative. Veterinary services continue vaccinations, tracing, and sampling on a nationwide basis. The culling of infected animals, mainly cows, continues in Dromolaxia due to the severe clinical symptoms they exhibit and the suffering they endure. This decision is being made pending further developments. The Ministry of Agriculture has informed the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture about the current situation of foot and mouth disease, explaining the legal framework and the obligations of Cyprus as an EU member state. Questions were answered and the situation was clarified. 88,650 doses of vaccines for cattle and 238,400 doses for sheep and goats have already been granted to private veterinarians. The Ministry reminds the need for strict adherence to restrictive measures, such as the movement of animals and feed, the movement of people without permission, and animal grazing. Zoos and theme parks remain closed.
