Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Annita Intervenes with Christodoulides Regarding Animal Culling – Calls for Re-evaluation of Decision

The President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, intervened with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, regarding the mass culling of animals in Cyprus due to foot-and-mouth disease. This intervention follows intense discussions in the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources, where strong concerns were expressed about the policy of culling entire herds, even after vaccinations. Ms. Demetriou emphasized the economic importance of livestock farming and called for a re-evaluation of the disease management strategy, urging the President to take appropriate action for a rational approach. The Parliament criticizes the practice of culling regardless of vaccinations, which causes despair among livestock farmers. The Ministry of Agriculture and the Presidency are under pressure to find a balance between health protocols and the survival of producers. The Agriculture Committee will continue the discussion tomorrow, awaiting updates on the measures being taken.
