Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak: Compensation Package and Vaccination Efforts Intensify

Cyprus is battling an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease with intensive vaccination efforts and strict preventative measures. The first 10,000 doses of the vaccine have been received, with another 50,000 expected on Thursday. Vaccinations began in cattle units in Aradippou with the assistance of private veterinarians. Simultaneously, sampling continues within a 3 and 10 kilometer radius of the affected areas, along with the culling of infected animals. Specific burial sites have been agreed upon with relevant authorities, adhering to strict environmental standards. Additionally, the number of spray control points in the area has been increased to 21, and wheel washes at livestock farms continue, with costs covered by the Department of Agriculture. The Minister held consultations with agricultural organizations and industry representatives to develop a compensation and support package for affected livestock farmers. The Department of Agriculture and Veterinary Services have been instructed to implement this package immediately. The situation is being closely monitored, and all necessary measures are being taken to limit the spread of the disease and protect livestock farming.
