Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Police and Veterinary Services Operation in Cheri – Animals Intended for Culling Found Hidden in Another Farm

A large number of sheep and goats were found at a farm in Cheri, allegedly moved illegally from a farm in Dali, where cases of foot-and-mouth disease had been detected, in order to avoid culling. The Police and Veterinary Services are investigating the case. Following information received, a team from the Veterinary Services, accompanied by the Police, went to the farm in Cheri, where the animals were found. The Police guarded the farm all night, while sampling and taking statements were carried out today. The animals allegedly belong to a livestock trader, whose farm in Dali had been restricted due to foot-and-mouth disease. The illegal movement of the animals poses a serious risk of spreading the disease, as they were moved from an infected area to an area where no cases had been detected. The authorities have intensified controls and have already identified four cases of illegal animal trafficking. Administrative fines and criminal prosecutions will be imposed on those involved.
