Foot and Mouth Disease: EU Experts Update Livestock Farmers on Vaccinations and Measures

Livestock farmers in Larnaca were updated by European Union experts on the vaccination program and protective measures being taken to combat foot-and-mouth disease. Representatives of cattle and sheep/goat farmers were informed about vaccinations within a 3 and 2 kilometer radius of cattle and pig farms, respectively. The discussion included the future of areas that have not yet experienced outbreaks of the disease, with experts remaining cautious about a possible universal vaccination of the livestock population. There were concerns about a potential change in Cyprus' epidemiological status in the event of a universal vaccination. Farmers from the Akamas region expressed their reservations about vaccination as the disease has not progressed in their area, while seeking assurances regarding the disposal of their products. The need for safeguards and the maintenance of existing quality standards were emphasized.
