Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Cyprus: "We Are Still at the Beginning" - Control May Take Six Months, Vaccination is Key

Veterinary services in Cyprus estimate that tackling the foot-and-mouth disease crisis is still in its early stages and could take up to six months, depending on the progress of vaccinations. The definitive eradication of the disease will be achieved when the virus is no longer detected in animals. Cyprus will return to its status as a foot-and-mouth disease-free country several months after the virus has completely disappeared. While the virus is not 100% fatal, it causes a significant reduction in milk production and delays animal recovery, leading to mass vaccinations. The rapid transmission of the virus and the movement of animals and livestock farmers could lead to a dramatic decrease in milk production, up to 50%, if no measures are taken. The crisis has economic implications for exports, except for halloumi, the production of which involves boiling milk that neutralizes the virus. The culling of animals is done to ensure the quality and adequacy of the livestock.
