Increased Dust Levels in the Atmosphere – Guidance from the Labour Inspection Department

Today, Tuesday, increased dust concentrations have been recorded in the atmosphere throughout Cyprus, according to measurements from the Labour Inspection Department. The highest values were recorded in Paphos (172.9 μg/m3) and Larnaca (163.4 μg/m3), while the lowest were in Agia Marina Xyliati (70.9 μg/m3) and Zygi (80.5 μg/m3). The Department advises the public, especially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and patients, to avoid going out in open spaces until the air quality improves. At the same time, the Labour Inspection Department calls on employers to take the necessary protective measures for employees who are in outdoor areas, such as providing appropriate personal protective equipment. The announcement emphasizes that “dust” refers to inhalable particles with a diameter of less than 10 μm (PM10). According to current legislation, the average daily dust concentration should not exceed 50 μg/m3. Today's values in many areas far exceed this limit, highlighting the need for preventive measures. The Labour Inspection Department is closely monitoring the situation and will inform the public of any developments. Protecting public health is a priority, and compliance with the instructions is vital to avoid complications.
