Cyprus's Net Position in Direct Foreign Investments Negative at -€41.9 Billion in 2024

The net position of Cyprus's Direct Foreign Investments (DFI) remained negative in 2024, further deteriorating to -€41.864 billion, compared to -€34.8567 billion in 2023. This is due to a larger decrease in outgoing DFI compared to incoming DFI. The stock of outgoing DFI decreased to €331.7521 billion from €366 billion in 2023, due to a reduction in debt instruments and equity securities. Conversely, the stock of incoming DFI amounted to €373.6161 billion from €400.857 billion in 2023, due to a decrease in equity securities, despite an increase in debt instruments. Net DFI transactions remained negative (-€5.1112 billion), as negative outgoing transactions exceeded negative incoming transactions. Negative outgoing transactions amounted to -€22.4668 billion, while incoming transactions amounted to -€17.3556 billion. Europe remains the dominant investment partner for both outgoing and incoming DFI. Investments are mainly directed towards the tertiary sector, particularly financial and insurance activities, reflecting the specialization of the Cypriot economy in services.
