Azerbaijani Denies Espionage Charges - Photographed Akrotiri and Andreas Papandreou Base

A 44-year-old Azerbaijani man, accused of espionage against Western interests, denies all charges against him. The accused was arrested in Limassol in June 2025 and appeared before the Limassol Permanent Criminal Court, where the request of the defense for access to material exchanged between the Cyprus Police and foreign states was rejected. According to the indictment, the Azerbaijani is alleged to have photographed and collected information about the British Akrotiri base and the Andreas Papandreou airbase in Paphos, which he then sent to third parties. At the time of his arrest, the accused had a significant amount of money in his possession, over €5,000, as well as a professional Nikon Coolpix P1100 camera with optical zoom up to 125x. Police had initially received information about the suspect's suspicious movements in the area of the British Bases, where he allegedly photographed with his camera and mobile phones. The case concerns offenses of espionage, publication of news concerning the defense of the Republic, illegal recording of images of a prohibited area, and legalization of proceeds from illegal activities. The accused, a British passport holder, was in Cyprus between April and June 2025, during which time he allegedly traveled between Limassol and Paphos to collect information. The hearing of the case has been set for the near future, while the defense seeks to prove the innocence of the accused. The case has attracted considerable interest due to the seriousness of the charges and the potential geopolitical implications.
