Record Number of Migrants Died in the Mediterranean in 2024

A record number of migrants have died in the Mediterranean in the first two months of 2024, with at least 655 people dead or missing. This number is more than double that of the same period last year and is a record for this time of year since 2014, when the International Organization for Migration (IOM) began keeping records. Storms, complex rescue operations, and border closures are increasing the risks for migrants trying to reach Europe during the winter. Frontex reports a decrease in attempted departures, but an increase in deaths, which is explained by the fact that smugglers are forcing migrants to embark on dangerous journeys in bad weather. Italy's agreements with Tunisia and Libya have changed the departure points, making the journeys longer and more dangerous. NGOs condemn obstacles to rescue operations and point to the vicious cycle created by the attempt to secure the borders.
