Elene Glykatzi-Arveler, an iconic Byzantine scholar and former president of the Sorbonne, passed away at the age of 99. Arveler, of Asia Minor refugee descent, was distinguished for her defense of Greek identity and her deep connection with Cyprus. In her speeches in Cyprus, she emphasized the importance of the Greek language for understanding history and linked Cyprus to the myth of Europe. Her relationship with Cyprus was multifaceted, including historical references and active participation. She supported the establishment of a Greek-speaking university on the island, emphasizing the Greek root of quality in Cyprus and Europe's obligation to accept Cyprus into the EU. Arveler proposed five "codes" of education – mother tongue, foreign language, scientific, artistic, and physical – and advised young people to have "feet firmly on the ground, eyes on the sky."
