Red to Yellow Supergiant - The Star Preparing to Explode

One of the largest known stars in the universe, WOH G64, appears to be transforming from a red supergiant to a yellow supergiant, an extremely rare evolution that suggests it is nearing its explosion as a supernova. The study, published in Nature Astronomy by the National Observatory of Athens, was based on detailed observations from the Very Large Telescope in Chile. The star is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud and has a radius more than 1,500 times larger than the Sun. The transition to a yellow supergiant occurs when massive stars shed their outer layers and their core shrinks. The cause of WOH G64's transformation may be interaction with a companion star or a phase of 'superwind' before the explosion. Observing this phenomenon offers a rare opportunity for scientists to study the death of a star in real time.
