Unprepared British Bases: Lack of Protocols, Says Kourion Mayor

The Mayor of Kourion, Pantelis Georgiou, testified before the Parliamentary Committee on Interior Affairs that the British Bases lacked protocols for managing emergency situations, stating that they were unprepared for the recent attack. The lack of jurisdiction of the Republic of Cyprus within the Bases led to a chaotic start in dealing with the situation in Akrotiri, with sirens sounding for hours and citizens in panic. Additionally, a lack of shelters and early warning systems was identified in the area. The Minister of Interior, Constantinos Ioannou, informed the Committee that a bill has been approved to evolve Civil Defence into Civil Protection. However, the Committee Chairman, Aristos Damianou, emphasized that civil protection and defence issues are longstanding problems that recur with every crisis. Mr. Damianou expressed concerns about the lack of preparedness and the quality of shelters, their accessibility, functionality, and their number. He also mentioned gaps in evacuation procedures and cooperation with the British Bases and airports. Despite the shortcomings, the Minister of Interior stated that there has been a shelter program since 1999, which covered approximately 30% of the population by 2023, mainly through voluntary allocation of private spaces. A revised legislative framework is also expected within June. Mr. Damianou stressed that the state must do everything possible to protect its citizens.
