“Lack of Empathy”: Health Minister Admits to Distress at Pediatric Oncology Clinic

The Minister of Health, Neophytos Charalambides, admitted to a “lack of empathy” during the execution of renovation works at the Pediatric Oncology Clinic of Makarios Hospital, acknowledging the distress suffered by children and their families. This admission came after strong reactions to the deafening noise caused by the works, which were located directly above the Oncology Clinic. The Minister visited the hospital and spoke with parents, doctors, and engineers, giving instructions for immediate coordination and for carrying out the works at times that cause the least possible disturbance. He also committed to continuous communication between the contractors and the families of the patients. The technical services assured that the noisiest works would be completed within the next few days. The Minister pledged that such a lack of sensitivity towards children hospitalized in the Oncology Clinic would never be allowed to happen again. The Minister of Health's admission of responsibility comes after complaints from parents about the psychological and physical distress their children suffered due to the noise and disruption caused by the works.
