Cyprus Supreme Constitutional Court Rejects Panikos Hatzipanagis' Appeal Regarding RIK News Director Position

The Cyprus Supreme Constitutional Court unanimously rejected the appeal of Panikos Hatzipanagis regarding the annulment of his promotion to the position of News and Current Affairs Director of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (RIK). The initial decision was made by the lower court, which ruled that the RIK Board of Directors had improperly exercised its discretion by giving excessive weight to the oral interview and overlooking the seniority and qualifications of Yannis Nikolaou, who was also a candidate. Mr. Nikolaou held a combination of a university and postgraduate degree in journalism, an advantage stipulated in the service scheme. Mr. Hatzipanagis argued that Mr. Nikolaou was not the only one with the advantage, that he was denied a fair trial, and that the Board's reasoning was sufficient, but the Supreme Constitutional Court dismissed all grounds for appeal, confirming the original decision. The appeal was dismissed with costs in favor of Mr. Nikolaou.
