Supreme Constitutional Court Rejects P. Hadjipanagi's Appeal Regarding RIK News Director Position

The Supreme Constitutional Court unanimously rejected the appeal of Panikos Hadjipanagi regarding the annulment of his promotion to the position of Director of News and Current Affairs of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (RIK). The decision upholds the original court decision that had annulled his promotion. The case concerned the announcement of the position in 2016, where Yannis Nikolaou and P. Hadjipanagi were among the candidates. The RIK Board of Directors had decided to promote P. Hadjipanagi, but this decision was challenged by Y. Nikolaou, who was more senior and held the required advantage of combining a university and postgraduate degree in journalism. The original court had ruled that the RIK Board of Directors had improperly exercised its discretion, giving excessive weight to the oral interview and disregarding the seniority and advantage of Y. Nikolaou. P. Hadjipanagi argued in his appeal that Y. Nikolaou was not the only one who held the advantage, that he was denied a fair trial, and that the Board's reasoning was sufficient. However, the Supreme Constitutional Court rejected all grounds of appeal, noting that Y. Nikolaou's advantage had been accepted and binding from the outset of the original proceedings. The decision confirms that the selection of P. Hadjipanagi was flawed due to the disregard of Y. Nikolaou's seniority and advantage.
