Fossil 'Treasure' in China Reveals 91 Unknown Animal Species That Survived Mass Extinction

Researchers in China have made a remarkable discovery in a quarry in Hunan province: they have identified nearly 100 new species of ancient animals, which lived approximately 500 million years ago and survived a mass extinction. The site, measuring 12 meters high, 30 meters wide, and 8 meters long, has revealed more than 50,000 fossils since 2021. The new species include ancestors of worms, sponges, corals, and jellyfish, as well as numerous arthropods, such as radiodonts. This discovery sheds light on the Cambrian period, known for the 'explosion' of evolution, and the Sinsk Event, a mass extinction caused by declining oxygen levels. Scientists believe the new fossils suggest the event impacted shallow waters more significantly.
