Renowned Cypriot Sculptor Pampos Michalis Passes Away

Renowned Cypriot sculptor, ceramist, painter, and scenographer Pampos Michalis passed away on Saturday night at the age of 78, at the Limassol General Hospital. Michalis, an iconic figure in Cypriot visual arts, left behind a rich and deeply experiential body of work that has shaped the modern artistic creation of the island. Born in Akhna in 1947, Michalis dedicated himself early on to sculpture and painting, seeking ways to express the memories, landscapes, and traumas of Cyprus. Following the Turkish invasion of 1974, he settled in Limassol, where he continued his work and founded the "Art Workshop," a space for creation and exchange of ideas. Michalis's work is characterized by elements of ancient Greek and Byzantine art, often focusing on themes such as displacement, loss, and the hope for return. His figures are minimalist and frontal, exuding an "archetypal force" that captures the pain and history of the Cypriot people. One of Michalis's most prominent works is his "Antiskino" in Dasaki Akhnas, a chapel-monument dedicated to Saint Demetrios, which serves as a symbolic place of collective memory and reflection. The loss of Pampos Michalis is a great loss for Cypriot art and culture.
