The former President of the Republic of Cyprus, George Vassiliou, passed away last night at the age of 94, at the General Hospital of Nicosia. His wife, Androulla Vassiliou, announced his death through a social media post, expressing her grief over the loss of her beloved partner. George Vassiliou was born in Famagusta in 1931 and studied economics at universities in Geneva, Vienna, and Budapest, where he earned his doctorate. He specialized in marketing and market research in London. Prior to his political career, he worked as an economist and founded the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CEMS) in 1962, which he directed until his election as President in 1988. He also founded the Middle Eastern Center and an institute for computer studies. Vassiliou was an academic, holding a professorship and participating in international conferences. In addition, he contributed to the field of marketing in the Middle East as an author and journalist, and collaborated with the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation presenting economic programs. He also served in various positions in chambers of commerce and banks.
