Autonomy Essential, Not Isolation, Foreign Minister Tells EP

Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos presented the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency on foreign policy and EU enlargement to the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET). He emphasized the need for an autonomous EU, capable of protecting its security, borders, and citizens, but also of building strong partnerships without seeking isolation. Mr. Kombos pointed out that the EU is in an era of transformation, facing an increasing number of interconnected crises. He stressed the need for a sharper analysis of geopolitical data and for more active EU engagement in addressing the challenges. Special reference was made to Ukraine, which the Cypriot Presidency considers a central priority. The Foreign Minister emphasized Cyprus's support for Ukraine's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and inviolability of borders, stating that Cyprus has experienced similar challenges due to the Turkish occupation. He also announced the Presidency's readiness to facilitate the rapid completion of the disbursement of a €90 billion loan to Ukraine. Finally, Mr. Kombos underlined the importance of transatlantic relations and the need to maintain a strong and mutually beneficial relationship with the United States, focusing on areas of convergence and constructive dialogue.
