Turkish Cypriot Negotiator Calls for Good Faith and Constructive Steps in Cyprus Talks

Mehmet Danas, “undersecretary of the presidency” and negotiator for the Turkish Cypriot side, stated that good faith and constructive steps are needed to create a climate conducive to a solution in Cyprus. He emphasized that the Turkish Cypriot side is ready to contribute to this effort. Danas referred to a productive meeting between Tufan Erhurman and the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, where developments following the last trilateral meeting and the deadlock regarding proposed confidence-building measures were discussed. Erhurman reportedly expressed his satisfaction to Ms. Holguin with her comments regarding the informal 5+1 meeting and her reference to his proposed methodology. Danas underscored the need for goodwill and constructive steps to move both communities away from the idea that a solution can only be achieved by the two leaders. He expressed hope that measures would be taken to address the issues discussed at Wednesday's meeting.
