Cyprus Not a Target, Focus on Citizen Safety Amidst Regional Tensions

Deputy Government Spokesperson Yannis Antoniou stated that Cyprus is not a target or part of the hostilities in the Middle East, but that the safety of citizens, infrastructure, and property is the top priority. He emphasized that foreign forces stationed on the island aim to protect Cyprus and strengthen its air defense, without targeting anyone. Mr. Antoniou mentioned that the first drone that crashed in the Akrotiri area had taken off from Lebanon. He also confirmed the resumption of flights to and from Larnaca and Paphos, noting however cancellations from the Persian Gulf region and Israel for security reasons. Regarding British bases, Mr. Antoniou stated that the issue is on the table, emphasizing that there is no reason to maintain military bases in an independent sovereign state-member of the EU. Any infrastructure or service used in Cyprus will be for humanitarian purposes only and will involve the evacuation of civilians. Finally, he referred to the strengthening of the citizen warning system, with the temporary continuation of SMS use until the activation of 112 in June, despite the limitations of the SMS system.
