Open Letter to the President: Cyprus Needs a Social Bank

In a letter to the President, the need for a social bank in Cyprus is emphasized, regarding the role and future of the Housing Finance Organization (HFO). The HFO, founded in 1980, has helped over 50,000 families acquire homes, but has lost its social orientation and now operates as a commercial bank. The letter highlights the need for modernization and flexibility of the Organization, so that it can respond to the modern needs of society and support government housing policy. It proposes greater flexibility in providing loans, with protection of deposits, and support for young couples. The problem of utilizing the housing plans of the Cyprus Land Development Corporation (CLDC) is highlighted due to the difficulty of borrowing from banks and the lack of a down payment. The letter calls on the Government to help the HFO regain its social identity and cooperate with the CLDC to implement a generous housing policy.
