Green Light for Energy Storage Systems to Reduce Power Cuts

Parliament has approved the budget of the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO) amounting to €67,287,000, which includes funds for the installation of three energy storage systems. These systems are expected to contribute to reducing curtailments for self-producers of energy from Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and improving network operation, especially during afternoon hours. The tenders for the supply, installation and operation of the systems are at the final stage and commercial operation is expected to begin within eight months of the award. The project will be mainly funded by the 'THALEIA 2021-2027' program and will include two storage units in Larnaca and Paphos, each with a capacity of 160 MWh, as well as one in Nicosia, with a capacity of 80 MWh. The installation of the systems is expected to enhance network stability and lead to savings.
