Turkey Considers 'Buffer Zone' Amid Iran Instability Fears

Turkey is considering establishing a 'buffer zone' on the Iranian side of the border as a precautionary measure in the event of a collapse of the government in Iran and a potential mass influx of refugees. Senior officials from the Turkish Foreign Ministry briefed lawmakers on possible scenarios, using the term 'buffer zone' to describe the intention to prevent a new migration crisis. Despite differing formulations, Ankara appears determined to take measures on the Iranian side of the border to limit the potential flow of refugees. Furthermore, Turkey has already strengthened security along its 560-kilometer border with Iran, constructing an extensive system of physical barriers, including electro-optical towers, towers with elevators, concrete walls, and defensive trenches. Surveillance is continuous, utilizing drones, aircraft, and recognition systems. According to Turkish media, approximately 4,000 people have been killed and 20,000 injured in recent protests in Iran. This situation raises concerns about destabilization in the region. Turkey opposes any foreign military intervention in Iran and calls on the United States to pursue a diplomatic solution. However, the United States is considering targeted strikes against Iranian officials deemed responsible for the suppression of protests. Simultaneously, they are reinforcing their military presence in the Middle East, with the arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in the region.
