Concerns Raised Over Bullying Incident Involving Teacher - "Feeling of Exclusion"

The Commissioner for the Protection of the Rights of the Child, Elena Pericleous, commented on the complaint regarding the bullying of students by a teacher, which is under investigation by the Ministry of Education. Ms. Pericleous expressed concern about the anonymous submission of the complaint to the Anti-Corruption Authority, emphasizing the need for transparency and evaluation of the actions of both the school and the education system. The Commissioner described the incident as "particularly worrying," stressing that such behavior negatively affects students' self-confidence and self-image, creating a sense of exclusion. She emphasized that the school environment should be a safe and supportive space where children have a voice and do not feel "invisible." Ms. Pericleous highlighted the need for immediate activation of support mechanisms, such as school counselors and social welfare services, to prevent the escalation of such incidents. At the same time, she pointed out the lack of effective complaint mechanisms within schools, noting that children often fear speaking out due to potential consequences or a belief that they will not be heard. The Commissioner is in dialogue with the Ministry of Education to develop a complaint recording mechanism that will empower children and ensure that every report is thoroughly investigated. Despite the incident, Ms. Pericleous stressed that the majority of teachers perform their duties with dedication, but exceptions must be addressed quickly and effectively.
