Concern over Human Trafficking in Cyprus Following Channel 4 Video

Significant concern has been raised in Cyprus regarding human trafficking following the release of a video by British Channel 4 alleging exploitation and sexual harassment of workers in Ayia Napa. The House of Representatives' Human Rights Committee has launched an investigation and will summon the Deputy Minister of Migration to be informed about the measures being taken to combat the phenomenon. The Cyprus Police has already begun an investigation, taking testimonies and cooperating with Channel 4 for further information. Simultaneously, there is discussion about the effectiveness of the coordination body for human trafficking, with proposals to transfer coordination to the Ministry of Justice. The Government is facing criticism for the initial subordination of the team to the Deputy Ministry of Migration, as it is considered not to meet the requirements of the situation.
