Appeal Court Increases Drug Offender's Sentence – Imprisonment Begins Immediately

The Court of Appeal has ordered the immediate imprisonment of a convicted drug offender for 3.5 years, overturning the original court decision that sentenced him to 27 months suspended. The appeal was filed by the Attorney General, who deemed the initial sentence insufficient given the seriousness of the offense – possession of approximately one kilogram of cannabis with intent to supply – and the severe penalties provided for by law (including life imprisonment). Despite the passage of four years since the original trial, the Court of Appeal justified the increase in the sentence, considering the delay as a mitigating factor, but also the need for prevention and deterrence of similar crimes. The case demonstrates the determination of the Legal Service to impose strict penalties on drug offenses.
