Foreign Ministry Statement on UN Secretary-General's Reports on Good Offices and UNFICYP in Cyprus

The Cypriot Foreign Ministry issued a statement regarding the reports of the UN Secretary-General (SG) to the Security Council on his Good Offices and the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). The Ministry welcomes the SG's reaffirmed commitment to continue efforts to restart negotiations for a sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue, based on the agreed framework and relevant Security Council resolutions. It expressed satisfaction with the resumption of substantive discussions on fundamental aspects of the problem and expectation for the continuation of talks from where they left off in Crans-Montana. At the same time, it expressed concern about the situation in Varosha and the violations of the ceasefire line by the Turkish army, while criticizing the UN's tendency to maintain equal distances, which leads to an inaccurate picture of the situation. Finally, the Foreign Ministry stressed the importance of UNFICYP's role in ensuring smooth living conditions in the buffer zone.
