TOM: How to Protect Yourself from Malfunctions of Hidden Door Opening Handles in Cars

The Department of Road Transport (TOM) of Cyprus has issued a warning to drivers regarding potential malfunctions of hidden door opening handles in certain cars, especially electric vehicles such as those from Tesla. The integrated, electronically controlled handles may not function properly in an emergency, such as a traffic accident or fire, endangering passengers. The malfunction may be due to a battery voltage drop or power outage, while existing safety standards do not adequately ensure safe exit from the vehicle. Although no incidents have been recorded in Cyprus, TOM recommends proactive checks and information on escape mechanisms. TOM advises owners of vehicles with such handles to be informed by the owner's manual on how to use the manual release mechanism, to identify the locations of the manual releases, and to inform passengers. It also suggests regular battery checks and checking for possible vehicle recalls. Globally, China has banned hidden handles for electric vehicles from 2027, while the US is investigating incidents with Tesla. TOM urges owners not to use the vehicle in case of door malfunctions and to contact for information.
