Allegations of Vote Rigging Disrupt Student Union Elections at University of Cyprus

Four student factions at the University of Cyprus (Progressive K.F., Agonas, Anagenesis, and Voice of Students) have accused of serious irregularities and attempted vote rigging during the elections for the election of the FEPAΝ Administrative Council. According to the allegations, a member of Protοporia (DISY) attempted to cast more than five ballots into the ballot box, which was confronted by a representative of the same faction, who destroyed them. The fate of these ballots remains unknown. The factions, after intense pressure, reached an agreement to halt the electoral process, while the electoral material is kept in a common space until further decisions are taken. The joint announcement emphasizes that the issue concerns democracy and legality, and not just ideological differences. The student factions stress the need to ensure the credibility and transparency of student elections, as well as the right of students to freely elect their representatives. Each faction maintains its own position on the matter, however the joint announcement aims to record the facts as they have developed. The incident has caused strong reactions and has questioned the validity of the electoral process. Further developments and decisions regarding the conduct of the elections are expected.
