Larnaca Taxi Drivers Strike Over Ride-Hailing App 'Chaos'

Taxi drivers in Larnaca began a four-hour work stoppage today, Tuesday, protesting the uncontrolled competition from ride-hailing apps, particularly at the airport. The Pan-Cypriot Federation of Urban Taxi Drivers (POAT) accuses the authorities of inaction despite repeated meetings and threatens a 24-hour strike on January 20th and an indefinite strike on January 28th if their demands are not met. The demands concern the immediate cessation of app activity at the airport outside of Larnaca and the strict adherence to taxi base regulations by all apps. POAT is calling for the enforcement of the law and the restoration of legality, while the Licensing Authority expressed surprise and urged POAT to cancel the strike actions, warning of potential negative impacts on the economy and tourism.
