Overflowing Katos Pyrgos Dam Brings Hope to Tilliria Region

The Katos Pyrgos dam in Tilliria has overflowed, marking the successful completion of a significant restoration project. The dam, built between 1957-1960, had experienced a dramatic reduction in its storage capacity due to the accumulation of sediment over more than half a century. The recent restoration operation, which began in September 2025 and cost €492,000 (co-funded by the Water Development Department and the EU), involved the removal of approximately 90,000 cubic meters of sediment and the replacement of the dam's old gate. The dam's overflow is important news for the region, as it protects Tilliria from prolonged drought and ensures irrigation for crops. The restoration of the dam was crucial, given its role in irrigation and mitigating the effects of climate change. The removed sediment was utilized in a sustainable manner, used as a soil improver in the community's cultivated areas. This practice contributes to strengthening agriculture in the region and protecting the environment. The successful restoration of the Katos Pyrgos dam serves as an example of timely maintenance and effective water resource management, with positive impacts on the local economy and the quality of life for residents.
