Analysis: Maintaining Cyprus' Image as a Safe Destination Amidst War is a Priority

Economist Tasos Yiasemidis emphasizes that ensuring Cyprus' image as a stable and safe destination for tourism and investment should be a priority, given the developments in the Middle East. He believes that Cyprus, as an exogenous economy, is affected by geopolitical and economic events in the wider region. He proposes highlighting “normality” through incentives to restart hotel operations, even with limited staff initially, as well as rescheduling meetings and conferences related to the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. He points out the need for a coordinated effort to promote Cyprus' image abroad and strengthen its connectivity, emphasizing new markets, as a decrease in tourism from countries affected by hostilities is expected. Regarding inflation, Mr. Yiasemidis warns of high imported energy costs and inflationary pressures on food due to foot-and-mouth disease. He proposes immediate state intervention to prevent profiteering and ensure the supply of products to the markets, even with temporary imports.
