Joint Call for Full EU Regulation Implementation Across Cyprus to Address Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties issued a joint call for the full implementation of EU regulations across the island, as a response to the ongoing foot-and-mouth disease epidemic. In a joint statement, they emphasized the need to strengthen existing joint mechanisms for the protection of nature and all living beings, given the devastating consequences of war and geopolitical tensions. The parties discussed the issue of Cyprus's geographical location and the impact of British Sovereign Base Areas on the island's security, highlighting that disasters do not recognize borders and require joint action. They appealed for peace and cooperation, emphasizing that Cyprus is a single ecosystem. Furthermore, they acknowledged the need for preparation in view of the summer months and the increasing risks of fires, drought and water scarcity, emphasizing that addressing these challenges requires common sense and cooperation. They reiterate the need for full and effective implementation of EU regulations to address foot-and-mouth disease, through the Bi-communal Technical Committees. Finally, the parties commit to strengthening existing joint mechanisms for the protection of nature and all living beings, recognizing that security and the response to natural disasters are only possible through cooperation and solidarity.
