Controversial Animal Culls: EKA Calls for Strategy Change

The Secretary-General of EKA, Panikos Chabas, confirmed that the animal culls are happening as depicted in circulating videos, but stressed that the President of the Republic has stated that the culls will stop. However, he noted inconsistencies between the President's statements and the actions of the Veterinary Services, scheduling a new meeting with the President for explanations. Mr. Chabas argued that foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus is not effectively addressed by mass culls, as the transmission conditions differ from those in the EU. He proposes continuous animal vaccination, as is successfully done in Turkey. The EKA Secretary-General warned that destroying all animals would have devastating consequences for the Cypriot economy, given the semi-occupied status. He also strongly criticized the Veterinary Services, accusing them of mismanagement from the beginning. Mr. Chabas concluded that policies should not be formed in offices but should be based on the reality of farms and livestock farmers.
