US Researcher: Artificial Intelligence May Threaten Humanity

Stuart Russell, a leading artificial intelligence researcher, warned that technology companies are engaged in an “arms race” with artificial intelligence systems that could lead to the extinction of humanity. Russell, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, called on governments to intervene to curb this trend, emphasizing that the heads of AI companies are aware of the risks posed by the development of Artificial Superintelligence systems. Russell stressed that the responsibility for preventing a catastrophe lies with governments, which are capable of acting collectively. He expressed the view that it is unfair to allow private companies to experiment with the safety of humanity, as the risks are too great. The development of artificial intelligence requires massive investment in energy-intensive data centers, while promising significant advances in areas such as the discovery of new drugs. However, it also carries risks, such as job losses, surveillance and violations of human rights, as well as the possibility that AI systems themselves will take control and endanger humanity. Russell mentioned that even the heads of AI companies recognize the risks, but cannot act unilaterally due to pressure from investors. He emphasized the need for international regulation of the field of artificial intelligence, in order to ensure the safety and well-being of humanity.
