Banking Habits are Changing in Cyprus

Banking habits in Cyprus are undergoing a rapid transformation, with Cypriots increasingly turning to digital banking. The use of mobile wallets and conducting transactions via mobile phones and computers are constantly increasing, replacing traditional banking practices. Bank of Cyprus reports that the base of active digital users has exceeded 504,000, while 23,669 new accounts were opened exclusively through digital channels in 2025, representing a 31% increase compared to 2024. Furthermore, 10,461 new customers started their collaboration with Bank of Cyprus by opening an account exclusively digitally, with an annual increase of 20%. Digital banking is no longer considered an alternative but the first choice for many. This is also confirmed by the issuance of 32,065 new debit cards through digital channels (27% increase) and the 12% increase in the value of insurance premiums purchased online, reaching €698,900. Generation Z is at the forefront of this change, as easy access to the banking system without bureaucratic barriers is considered essential for their financial empowerment. The elimination of the requirement for physical presence to open an account has facilitated the entry of young people into the banking system. The 18-25 age group shows the largest increase (59%) in opening new accounts via mobile, with 5,888 new accounts. Additionally, the upgraded application for children and adolescents under 18, Joey, has already gathered around 9,000 registrations. Younger users make an average of 50,000 card transactions monthly, worth around €400,000. This phenomenon is linked to the international discussion on 'Financial Inclusion', which was highlighted at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The market is also showing a strong trend towards services that facilitate international transactions and flexibility in payments, such as opening accounts in foreign currencies via mobile.
