Changes to Support Framework for Students Unable to Attend School

The Ministry of Education is introducing changes to the support framework for students who are unable to attend school due to health reasons. These changes include the establishment of new protocols to manage the educational process at various stages – from diagnosis and treatment to hospital, home education, and treatment abroad – aiming for flexibility and better adaptation to students' needs. Simultaneously, systematic training for teachers is being planned through the Pedagogical Institute, to better prepare them to support these students. The possibility of a permanent teacher presence at the Makarios Hospital Pediatric Department is also being considered. The new procedures will include clear guidelines for parents, classroom management when a student is absent due to health issues, communication between the school, classmates, and the hospitalized or home-treated student, and smooth reintegration into school after recovery. Educational organizations have emphasized the need to simplify the process of enrollment in home education and expedite the review of applications, as many parents are unaware of the required steps. According to the data presented, approximately 33 elementary and 228 secondary school students are currently unable to attend school for health reasons, with absences ranging from one month to the entire school year. The Ministry of Education recognizes the need for immediate and effective support for these students, as well as addressing the problems arising from their prolonged absence. The protocol is in its final stage and is expected to be submitted to the Legal Service for review. The implementation of the new protocols for secondary education is targeted to begin with the next school year. Teacher training will be ongoing and will cover the new needs arising from supporting students with health problems.
