Expensive Homes, Heavy Responsibilities

The government is facing criticism for its lack of concrete measures to address the housing crisis, limiting itself to general statements. In contrast, AKEL is presenting specific proposals to control the sale of properties to foreigners, especially in sensitive areas, with the aim of protecting social cohesion and national security. According to data submitted to Parliament, 40% of property sales in 2024 involved foreign buyers, with high rates in Paphos, Famagusta, Larnaca, and Limassol. AKEL's proposals include strict control of transactions, restrictions in sensitive areas, mandatory disclosure of the beneficial owner, termination of assignment agreements, and a ban on the full purchase of agricultural and livestock land. These proposals aim to prevent uncontrolled land sales and promote a housing policy that will produce affordable housing. The discussion began following AKEL's initiative in the Parliamentary Committee on Interior, where two bills were submitted by the party's General Secretary, Stefanos Stefanou. These proposals were described as well-studied and implementable. AKEL is calling on the government to move beyond words and actively support solutions to the housing crisis, as housing is becoming increasingly a privilege for the few. The party has already submitted a comprehensive framework for solving the problem.
