AKEL Proposes Abolition of Social Support Agency, Transfer of Student Welfare to IKIK

AKEL proposes the abolition of the Social Support Agency within three months and the transfer of responsibility for student welfare to the Cyprus State Scholarships Foundation (IKIK). AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou stated that the Agency creates conditions of institutional entanglement, as it is funded by sponsorships from entrepreneurs who bid for and undertake public works. The bill, co-signed by MPs Kyriakos Hadjigiannis and Alexandra Attalidou, provides that IKIK will take over all of the Agency’s obligations to students. AKEL insists on abolition rather than improvement of the Agency, as it believes that student welfare should be a state policy with transparent and meritocratic procedures. Mr. Stefanou accused the Christodoulides government of ignoring concerns about transparency and meritocracy, and of trying to undermine the majority’s efforts to publicize the Agency’s sponsors. He stressed that the transfer of funds to IKIK will strengthen the institutional operation of student welfare and allow for the coverage of more students. This move comes after reports highlighting potential conflicts of interest and a lack of transparency in the operation of the Agency. AKEL believes that the abolition of the Agency and the transfer of responsibility to IKIK is necessary to restore public trust and ensure fair access to education.
