Unjustified Increase in Gas Prices: Supermarket Association Calls for Profit Margin Investigation

The Cyprus Supermarkets Association (CSA) expresses concern over the unjustified increase in gas prices and announces a letter to the Ministry of Commerce to investigate potential oligopolistic practices. Executive Secretary of the Association, Andreas Hadjiadamou, pointed out that the announcements of gas companies are identical, indicating limited competition. The price of a gas cylinder has reached approximately €24. The CSA calls for an investigation of the profit margin at both the retail and trader level, to create a fair pricing framework. It also proposes including LPG in the products with a zero VAT rate, to protect pensioners and low-income earners. The increase in gas prices significantly burdens households, especially in view of Easter. The Association assures that there will be an adequate supply of basic products, such as meat, and that supermarkets are considering alternative solutions to maintain stable prices. The investigation into gas price increases will help clarify the causes and prevent unfair practices. The CSA seeks to ensure a competitive environment in the gas market, with the aim of protecting consumers and avoiding unjustified price increases.
