Sisters in Crete Battling Meningococcal Disease

Two sisters, aged 22 and 26, from Heraklion, Crete, are hospitalized in ICUs with meningococcal disease. The 22-year-old is showing signs of improvement and doctors are considering extubation, while the 26-year-old's condition is critical as she developed encephalitis. The 22-year-old initially presented with a high fever and was examined at a local clinic, where no other alarming symptoms were found. As the fever persisted, both sisters were taken to the hospital, where the 22-year-old's condition deteriorated and she required intubation. As a precaution, the 26-year-old underwent a lumbar puncture, which initially showed nothing concerning, but her condition worsened later. Authorities are closely monitoring the condition of the two women and trying to limit the potential spread of the meningococcus.
