Cyta Seeks Equal Institutional Treatment for Access to Energy Market

Cyta is seeking equal institutional treatment with the EAC (Electricity Authority of Cyprus) to gain access to the energy market. The President of Cyta, Maria Tsiakka, presented this request to the Parliamentary Committee on Finance, emphasizing that Cyta aims to offer energy from renewable sources to consumers who do not have access to such solutions, such as young couples and small businesses. In a second phase, Cyta plans to offer packages that combine energy, telecommunications services, and technology solutions. Ms. Tsiakka stressed that Cyta is not seeking any exemption from RAEK (Energy Regulatory Authority) or the Competition Commission and does not aim to compete with the EAC or private companies, but to purchase energy from them. Representatives of RAEK and the Competition Protection Commission expressed the view that Cyta's entry into the energy market is welcome, but emphasized that it must comply with the regulatory framework and obtain the necessary licenses. The State Aid Commissioner noted that there is no objection from her Office, unless there are state guarantees. The Chairman of the Committee, MP Chrysos Pantelidis of DIKO, stated that the Committee had requested the views of the stakeholders and will examine the bill to amend Cyta's regulatory framework.
